Letters to General William Tecumseh Sherman about drawings from Red Dog and Zotom
Scope and content
Two letters from Lieutenant Richard Henry Pratt and Dr. Valentine T. McGillycuddy. Letter from Pratt dated January 22, 1876 from St. Augustine, Florida. Mentions paying Zotom for a book of drawings. Discussion of having the government add a detachment of Indian soldiers. Letter from McGillycuddy dated December 11, 1884 from Pine Ridge Agency, Dakota, now South Dakota. Letter is informing Sherman of the death of Red Dog. It mentions that Red Dog was involved with the Treaty of 1868. The letter goes on to say that Red Dog had promised Sherman a book of drawings of Sioux warriors and before passing he had given these drawings to McGillycuddy who is sending them on to Sherman. The back of this letter has a note in Sherman's hand that says he has given the portraits to his son Philemon Sherman. Folder also contains an address card of Miss Eleanor Sherman Fitch, as well as a note questioning whether McGillycuddy is right in saying that Red Dog signed the Treaty of 1868.
