Mohegan Indian documents
Scope and content
Census of the Mohegans living in Mohegan at New London, December 16-17, 1755. This document has meeting notes from the previous year discussing the census. It contains a list of the names of all the Indians living in the area at the time. Also, Act of Assembly at Hartford in favor of Benjamin Uncas, Sachem, forbidding the cutting of wood by settlers in tribal lands at Mohegan, May 3, 1759; complaint against Samson Occom addressed to the Governor of the General Assembly of Connecticut and Peter Socomawas, signed by Zachery Johnston, Lymon Coyoy, Noak Uncas, Abimel Uncas, Peter Atumass, Lymon Coyoi Farr, May 28, 1771; letter from Jonathan Trumbull, at Lebanon, to Peter Socomwas, at Mohegan, by hand of Councilor Zachery, September 26, 1772, in regards to building of houses by Indians; petition to Assembly at New Haven that privileges be not taken away, signed Mohegans, Nahanticks, September 7, 1786, in which the writers are asking for natural privileges like hunting and fishing on their land to be unhindered and not forbidden. They mention going to war for the government and ask why after being willing to die fighting for the country they are no longer being given the rights that their forefathers had. Also last will and testament of Henry Coequied, April 15, 1791.

Jonathan Trumbull served as governor of Connecticut from 1769 to 1784. Trumbull College at Yale is named for him, as is Trumbull, Connecticut.
