New York State College of Veterinary Medicine oral history project
Scope and content
The project includes 25 audio cassettes, 26 master copy CDs, 26 service copy CDs, 3 reel-to-reel tapes, and 3 transcripts.These interviews were conducted with veterinarians, faculty of the NYS College of Veterinary Medicine, and others regarding the development of veterinary medicine and practice in the United States as well as recollections of events in the history of the NYS College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University.
Interviews were originally done by Ellis P. Leonard, Emeritus Professor of Small Animal Surgery, beginning in 1972, for his use in writing a history of the New York State College of Veterinary Medicine. Leonard interviewed Donald W. Baker, August 27, 1975; Arthur Gordon Danks, August 6, 1979; H. H. Dukes, August 8, 1973 (original tape and transcript available); Myron G. Fincher, June 8, 1972 (original tape and transcript only); Philip P. Levine, 1978; Floyd C. Sager, January 24, 1974 (original tape and transcript available); Luella Williams, ca. 1975; and Elmer Woelfer, September 22, 1978.
In 2004, the College initiated a second project. Laura Finkel and Jeannie Griffith interviewed Bruce Calnak, March 18, 2004 (2 tapes); Randall Cole, March 19, 2004;Julius Fabricant, April 8, 2004 (2 tapes); Robert Habel, April 16, 2004 (2 tapes); George Poppensiek, April 30, 2004 (2 tapes); Fred Scott, May 28, 2004; Robert Wasserman, May 7, 2004. Additionally, Laura Finkel and Susanne Whitaker interviewed Alexander Winter on April 29, 2004. At Reunion, June 11, 2004, Laura Finkel interviewed Morris Erdheim, Robert Farber, and Jeanne and Joe Logue.
There are also recordings of the College of Veterinary Medicine Alumni Association meeting in 1985, recorded by Ellis Leonard, and of a lecture by Stephen Ettinger, "The Five Veterinarians I Met on the Way to Heaven," April 16, 2004.
