Le Bret-Beauvilliers correspondence
Scope and content
Letter, dated 18 Nov. 1701, from Henri Le Bret (ca. 1630-1708), a clergyman from Montauban, to the Duke of Beauvilliers. Le Bret discusses cases of false conversions; mixed marriages, considered unfavorable to Catholicism; the abuse of the sacraments; the ineffectiveness of the bishop; and other topics. Also subsequent typescript copy of this letter.
The second letter, dated 30 December 1701, is a response from Paul, Duke of Beauvilliers (1648-1714). The Duke's letter fits within the context of the Assemblée pour les affaires de nouveaux convertis (the Assembly for the Affairs of the Newly Converted), which was still active at that time.
