Scope and content

The collection consists of Hanshaw's letters home from the time of his active service until his death in March, 1944. In addition, letters of sympathy to his widow, Augusta Hanshaw and letters from another officer, Frank Moran, complete the collection.

Biographical / Historical

John G. Hanshaw was one of four sons of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hanshaw of Ithaca. A graduate of Ithaca High School and of Cornell, class of 1931, Hanshaw was a reserve officer when he was called to service in October, 1941. Lieutenant Hanshaw was an infantry officer attached to the military government in Italy at the time of his death. He was awarded the Purple Heart posthumously.
