Biographical / Historical
Juliana Howell came from Orange County, N.Y., and attended the Litchfield Female Academy in Litchfield, Connecticut. The Academy, run by Sarah Pierce, was one of the pioneering institutions for women's education in this country. Juliana Howell boarded with the family of the Reverend Lyman Beecher while she attended the school. Women's academies at this time often required girls to keep journals like this one.
