Scope and content
Logbook of the whaling ship "Twilight" and a photograph of its captain, Sylvester Hathaway; describes route and activities of the "Twilight." Also, manuscript reminiscences of Sylvester Hathaway, "Twenty-seven years on a whaleship," together with a typewritten transcription, and a copy of the Honolulu newspaper The Friend, August 11, 1859, containing a poem on the wreck of the "Twilight" and the subsequent rescue of its sailors by the "Morning Star." An article in the same issue further describes the voyage of the "Morning Star."

Biographical / Historical
American whaling master, captain of the ship "Twilight" out of New Bedford, Massachusetts, which struck a reef and was lost on June 2, 1859 near Tahiti. Earlier, Hathaway married Mary Jane Webb, daughter of Darius Webb of Redfield, New York. He bought a home in Redfield (Oswego County) in 1858.
