Biographical / Historical
Merritt Finley Miller was born on July 7, 1875 in Grove City, Ohio. He received a Bachelor of Agricultural Science from Ohio State University in 1900 and a Master of Agricultural Science from Cornell University in 1901. Miller spent two years studying in Germany at the University of Gottingen, 1910-1911, and at the University of Munich, 1933-1934. He received honorary doctorates from Kansas State University in 1938 and Ohio State University in 1939. After a year as a soil surveyor with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and two years as an instructor in agronomy at Ohio State, Miller began his long career with the University of Missouri. He was a professor of agronomy from 1904-1914, professor of soils from 1914-1938, and dean of the College of Agriculture and director of the Agricultural Experiment Station in Columbia Missouri from 1938 to 1945, after which he spent many years as professor emeritus. His son was Robert Demorest Miller who served as dean of the faculty at Cornell University.
