In 1799 a group of nine men and women banded together and with the help of missionary Zadoc Hunn organized the First Congregational Society of the Town of Canandaigua. They had no church building but held services in log houses, public buildings and various places. in 1812 with a membership of about forty communicants they erected a stately meeting house.
