The collection also includes typescript copies of reports dating from January to December 1887, sent by "Mercier" to the Governor General from the provincial archives of Bienhoa, which retained the originals.

Scope and content

Correspondence to and from the Governor General, relating only to French relations with the Montagnard tribes in Cochin China and border lands, currently the provinces of Bienhoa and Thudamot. Includes copies of letters, radio and telegraph messages sent by the Governor General to his subordinates, to his peers (French Governors or Residents in Cambodia, Annam, and Tonkin), and to his superior, the Governor of Indochina; copies of similar messages sent to him (or to France relating to his area of responsibility); reports and maps of tours made of the area in question; and records of meetings of officials to discuss problems. Correspondents of note are the Governor General Pierre Andre Pages and the Governor of Indochina, Rene Robin. Subjects discussed include the French "pacification" efforts and resistance to them, efforts to bring French education and civilization to the area; building of roads into the Highlands; interservice and interagency disputes. Of particular interest are the reports on Montagnard customs and on religious cults (the "Python-god") and sorcerers, although these reports are limited to questions of political security. There are also analyses of Montagnard languages and efforts to transcribe them.
