Scope and content

Includes Hazen's diaries (18 volumes, 1854-1914) describing his religious views and experiences, family and household matters, national affairs, his emotional states, his ministry, and his voyages to India and missionary work in Aruppukkottai, Madras (1867-1869, 1884-1914), to which he was accompanied by his first wife, Ida Julia Chapin, and his second wife, Hattie A. Cook, and various events during the intervening years; correspondence (1853-1914) consisting mainly of letters (1853-1877) Hazen wrote to his father in Ithaca, New York and letters (1912-1914) he received from Indians, fellow clergymen, and relatives including his nephew, Charles Hazen Blood; sermons (1864-1914) and notes and scrapbooks of material for sermons and Bible class notes in the hand of one or both of his wives; personal accounts; Hazen's Amherst College photograph album (1862); and many photographs of his family and of India.
