Biographical / Historical

Artist, Professor of Fine Arts. J. O. Mahoney (1907-1987) received a B.A. from Southern Methodist University and a bachelor of fine arts degree from Yale University. He was awarded the Prix de Rome in 1932 for three years study and travel in Europe. From 1942 to 1945 he served as a captain in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He began teaching painting at Cornell University in 1939 and retired in 1973. He was chairman of the Dept. of Fine Arts from 1963 to 1968. In 1937, he won a national competition for the design of mural paintings at the New York World's Fair. He also painted murals in numerous public buildings and private houses.
