Biographical / Historical

At its formation this church was composed of several families, most of them residing at West Hill, and most former members of the Wheeler Baptist Church. The church was apparently organized in 1821 and in 1822 built a log meeting house on West Hill which was destroyed by fire in 1833. In 1835 a frame church was built. In this building the church worshipped until 1842, when the membership divided into four parts. This church, which remained with the house of worship, was known as the First Baptist Church of Prattsburg. Before the division the church was quite prosperous and had a membership of 209 in 1838. This was the result of a revival in 1837 under the leadership of Rev. T.S. Sheardown. Over 100 were added to the church that year, 98 by baptism. After 1842 each part of the church declined and only one, the Baptist Church of Prattsburg Village (Collection #6135) survived. The First Church survived only 5 or 6 years and eventually sold the meeting house to the Methodists. The church was a member of the Steuben Association from 1823 onwards.
