Biographical / Historical

Efforts to form St. Thomas Church were first made by Mrs. Elizabeth Hull Townsend in 1815. In 1823 she secured the services of the Reverend Mr. Hopkins as missionary to Bath, Angelica, and places in between. After the death of the Reverend Hopkins, Bishop Hobart directed the Reverend William W. Bostwick to take on the missionary work in the area. In 1826 Reverend Bostwick organized parishes in Bath and Hammondsport and directed the erection of churches in both places. Constant Cook subscribed over $30,000 for the building of St. Thomas Church in Bath. The cornerstone was laid by Bishop Coxe in 1869, and the consecration services were held on April 13, 1871.
