Scope and content

Letters to relatives in England describing conditions of his emigration to America, the emigrant agents in Liverpool, the passage across the Atlantic in a sailing vessel, his work as a tailor in Boston and in Manchester, New Hampshire, the wages earned by himself and his wife, and urging his brother, a potter, to emigrate by describing the location of pottery works in New England and commenting on the ease with which another trade might be learned. The Dawson letter from Shullsburg, Wisconsin, relates to working conditions in the lead mines, the cost of provisions, and other matters.
