Scope and content

Collection includes the records of the 3rd Regiment of Artillery, New York State Volunteers, which was stationed in New Berne, North Carolina from 1861-1865, and of which Stewart was colonel; Stewart papers consist of daily reports and correspondence between officers, letters from enlisted men and recruiting agents in New York City, letters regarding political appointments, bounties, the mutinous conduct of the 96th Regiment over delayed pay, conditions in North Carolina following the Civil War, settlers' claims, the large amount of uninvested capital in Auburn, New York, and a letter from George Copway, Chippewa Chief, asking for favors; also, officers' rolls, clothing accounts, post orders, morning reports, and regimental letter books with incoming letters describing conflicts at Fort Macon, Kinston, Whitehall, Goldsboro, and Washington (N. C.).
