Scope and content

Letters, receipts, promissory notes, and clippings by, to, or about Cobbett, with one portrait of him. Consists mainly of letters by Cobbett, many of them to Mr. Dean, James Gutsell, and Mr. Oldfield, giving detailed instructions on the management of Cobbett's farm and financial, publishing, and legal affairs. The letters include instructions and comments on personal, family, social, and political matters, and on matters of clothing as well. Letters concerning publishing have to do with the publication of Cobbett's Weekly Political Register and of his books, Legacy to Parsons and Legacy to Labourers. Receipts and promissory notes in notebook entitled "Cobbett's Paper Money" apparently relate to a law case, Wright vs. Cobbett.
