 Collection — Multiple Containers
Identifier: 4655

Scope and content

Letters, clippings, photographs, slides, film reels, television scripts, and sound recordings by, to, or about Harry S. Truman, focussing on his experiences as an artillery captain in World War I and his years as President. Letters, chiefly between Truman and Arthur W. Wilson, include a substantial letter Truman wrote from Verdun in January 1919, detailing his artillery unit's movements and experiences in combat in the fall of 1918. Subsequent letters are mainly social in nature, but include a 1963 letter by Truman in which he gives his opinion of a recent television documentary on him.

Scope and content

Clippings focus on Truman's participation in World War I, his inauguration in 1949, the Truman Library, Truman's memoirs, his relations with the public and with Eisenhower during and after his presidency, his retirement, and his funeral. Photographs and slides focus on Truman in World War I and his 1949 Presidential inauguration. Also included are two film reels and typewritten scripts for a two-part television biography of Truman for Mike Wallace's series "Biography."

Scope and content

Additional papers include typewritten reminiscences of journalist Herb Graffis (1981), and the program for the dedication of a statue of Truman in Independence, Missouri (1976).
