Scope and content

Consists chiefly of manuscript correspondence of various French, German, and British physicians and scientists, with some portrait engravings and sketches, biographical information, and portrait photographs. Also included are undated home remedies and prescriptions in French which appear to be of the late 18th or early 19th century; notes in French on biological processes, from the period ca. 1793-1805; notes for medical journal articles in English and French; and a legal document of 1738 concerning the general hospital in Tours, France. Correspondents include Barthelemy St. Hilaire, Louis Figuier, Camille Flammarion, Louis Bernard Guyton de Morveau, Louis Léonce Elie de Beaumont, Geoffroy St. Hilaire, Mathias Hieronymus Saxtorph, and Gaston Tissandier. Photographs and sketches are of H. Huchard, Hippolyte Mireur, Albert Pitres, Siméon Flaissières, Dujardin-Beaumetz, Prof. Rollet, Armand Succi, Etienne Tarnier, and Fernand Widal.

Subjects of portraits include Jean Astruc, Albinus, Leopoldo Marco Antonio Caldani, Duméril, Paracelsus, Jean Riolan, Andreas Vesalius, Nicolas Lemery, Georges Louis Leclerc de Buffon, Antoine François de Fourcroy, Franz Anton Mesmer, Rembert Dodoens, and Guillaume Rondelet.
