The George Junior Republic of Western Pennsylvania records document the organization’s activities dating 1909-2013. The collection includes organizational files, correspondence, photographs, newspapers, and brochures. The collection includes Board minutes and reports, 1952-1989; historical files, including a file on Donald Lobaugh, a Citizen who won the Congressional Medal of Honor in World War II and a file on the Ground Observer Corps in the 1950s; constitution; official copies of rules and regulations; general correspondence of the superintendents, 1915-1948; correspondence of Leonard S. Levin (president and trustee of the Republic), R.M.T. McCready (trustee), Walter Black (Chief Probation Officer, Allegheny County), and others; case studies; class records and rosters of "citizens"; alumni association files; managerial, fiscal, and legal records; speeches; student newspaper files, 1941-1943; printed items; scrapbook; and part of a manuscript for "A Laboratory Study of Democracy," ca. 1940, by Earle D. Bruner (superintendent, Grove City).

Biographical / Historical
George Junior Republics, founded by William Reuben George, were residential treatment centers which aimed to reform "delinquent" youth. The first Republic was formed by George in Freeville, NY in 1895, with additional Republics opening in other states in the following 15 years, incuding those in Redington, PA (1898) and Grove City, PA (1909).
