Scope and content
This collection includes ledgers (4 vols., 1841-97) dealing with cases handled, correspondence, articles of agreement, bonds, leases, bills, and other papers concerning the private law practice of Elias, George, and Harry Harding; indexed dockets (5 vols., 1848-84; 1 vol., 1896-1900, 1917-22, 1924-30) pertaining to various cases presided over mainly by Elias and George Harding as justices of the peace, the earliest volume containing a list of marriages performed (1848-72). Also, account books (6 vols., 1843-98), among them personal and legal accounts for E.E. Harding and flour milling accounts for the firm of Paul & Bristol; a records book (1846-58) and other papers concerning the Hume School District No. 4, of which E.E. Harding was a trustee, including a map of the district, receipts for teachers' salaries, fuel, and school repair, and book catalogs; and G.W. Harding's scrapbook of newspaper clippings, some of which refer to his legal practice.

Biographical / Historical
Attorneys. George Wood Harding (1850-1931) attended Cornell University from 1869 to 1971, and was admitted to the New York Bar in 1873. He then began to practice law with his father, Elias Henry Harding, whose office was located in Hume, New York. George's son, Henry E. Harding (1880-1956), graduated from Cornell in 1905 and joined the law practice in 1907, remaining until 1923. He became U.S. Commissioner in Buffalo in 1928, and opened his own law office in Buffalo in 1929.
