Scope and content

The collection consists of 55 separate bound diaries (1850-1902, 1904-1905) written by Edwin Mead about his activities in the Presbyterian Church as an elder, trustee, and Sunday School superintendant; his observations concerning world, national, and local events; comments on lectures, social events, customs, religion, current issues, friends and relatives, and weather conditions. Also included are cash accounts in back of most of the diaries. There are also two bound diaries that were written by Nancie E. Mead, eight account books of Edwin D. Mead, one account book of John C. Mead, a public school record book, and miscellaneous newspaper clippings, receipts, and notes.

Biographical / Historical

Edwin D. Mead, an inventor of farm machinery in Schuyler County, New York, was born in 1829 (son of John C. Mead). He married Theodotia Swan in 1855, who died giving birth to their son, Theodore Swan Mead in 1857. In 1859, Edwin married Theodotia's sister, Nancie Eliza, who gave birth to one child, Cora May Mead, in 1863.
