Biographical / Historical

Geologist, professor of Geology at Smith College. Benjamin Shaub was born in 1893. He received a degree in engineering from Cornell University in 1923, and taught machine design at Cornell for six years. He received an M.S. (1928) and a Ph.D.(1929) from Cornell in geology. In 1931 he joined the faculty at Smith College, teaching mineralogy, petrography, optical mineralogy, and gems and precious stones for 27 years, until his retirement in 1958. After retirement, he became interested in ornithology, traveling extensively to photograph birds and to continue to study minerals in Africa and Central and South America. Ben Shaub died in 1993.
