Scope and content
Correspondence, 1940-1949, between Howard E. Babcock, Sr., and Howard, Jr. concerning the son's management of the South Springs Ranch, Roswell, New Mexico, a Cornell University property which they bought in 1943; among the topics discussed are details of operation, especially in regard to the availability, tranportation, and wages of German prisoners-of-war employed during the wartime shortage of farm labor; also included are budgets, inventories, and financial reports, as well as blueprints and photographs of the main residence of the ranch. Other correspondence of Howard, Sr. with Howard, Jr. concerns his own operation of Larchmont Farms near Trumansburg while his son was in New Mexico and the latter's part in the establishment of a Grange League Federation mill in Roswell.
Also, Howard, Sr.'s correspondence with another son, John Butler Babcock, a daughter, Barbara, and her husband Dr. John Winslow Hirshfeld. Babcock/Butler family genealogy and excerpts from the diaries of Hilda B. Babcock; reminiscences of Caroline Amelia Field Babcock (photocopy), poem by Josiah G. Holland (photocopy), and photographs of Babcock family and of hay chopping scene.
