Scope and content

Correspondence, diaries, scrapbooks, genealogy, essays, photographs, accounts, church records, and other papers concerning the activities of the related Berry, Nearing, and Osborn families of Onondaga and Livingston Counties, New York. Includes correspondence relating to a smallpox epidemic, temperance meetings, prices of crops, farming conditions, the establishment of a barbed wire factory, politics, and emigration from New York to the Minnesota Territory. Also includes diaries of Mary Nearing's reflections on her life as a teacher in Pompey and Lafayette, New York; diaries of her sister Alicia describing her teaching at Williamsville Institute in Erie County, New York (1863-64); diaries of Alicia's husband, W.W. Hayden, concerning his senior year at Williams College, and diaries of Alson Nearing Squires, Emma Nearing, George Nearing, Mary Ann Nearing Berry, Fred Berry, Matthias Berry, Almira Griffith Ellis, Francis Ellis, Daniel Ellis, and Morris Berry. Also, a series of letters from L.A. Berry of Marshalltown, Iowa (1877-99) to his family in Pompey giving a detailed account of life in the newly developed area, and his legal practice there; sermons of Ansel Griffeth; Pompey Academy records, and Horton Nearing papers. Family tree available in digital form, originals returned to donor.
