Scope and content
Miscellaneous papers of Asa Fitch of Washington County include notes on ornithology, 1837; undated notes on medicine, chemistry, astronomy, and entomology; drafts of Stillwater Lyceum lectures on temperance and other subjects, 1830s; address before the Executive Committee of the New York State Agricultural Society, 1843; and other notes on his agricultural interests. There is also a diary, 1863-65, of Fitch's daughter, Sarah Elizabeth (Mrs. Lemuel) Poates of Bolton, Mississippi, describing the destruction of the Civil War in that vicinity, and a later typescript paper on her life as a school teacher and plantation wife, written by her granddaughter, Mrs. May Beattie Johnson; also her notes on her grandfather John Lemeul Poates, and a photograph of Mrs. Poates.
Also, the rough draft of a letter asking an acquaintance to collect insect specimens on a trip to California, Mexico, and South America; handdrawn geoglogical maps from around Salem, N.Y.; notes on cloud formations during the month of July; and drafts and notes for historical studies of Washington County and adjacent areas.
