Scope and content

5 tapes and 12 transcripts of interviews with Raymond Albrectsen, Sydney A. Asdell, Stanley Brownell, J. Stanley Earl, Charles Henderson, Philip Higley, Maurice W. Johnson, Fred F. McKenzie, Enos J. Perry, Glenn W. Salisbury, and W.D. Goeke, and a group interview with George W. Tailby, James Burke, and Stanley J. Brownell. Subjects discussed are the development of artificial breeding in dairy cattle and other farm animals during the 1930s and 1940s, particularly the formation of the New York Artificial Breeding Cooperative, American Breeders' Service, Northern Illinois Artificial Breeding Cooperative; promotion of techniques used by advocates of artificial breeding; resistance by farmers and researchers to artificial insemination; criteria for bull selection; development of electronic processing of genetic and biometric data related to dairy cattle production; preservation and transportion of semen; diseases related to reproduction in dairy cattle; attitudes of veterinarians toward artificial breeding; and mores with respect to artificial insemination. Individuals mentioned at length include Carl E. Ladd, Frank B. Morrison, Myron Fincher, Harold Creal, Rockefeller Prentice, James A. Henderson, Sydney Asdell, and Maurice Johnson. Interviews conducted by Robert W. Bratton and Gould P. Colman.
