Scope and content

Civil War letters by Crandall of the 23rd New York Volunteers in Virginia to cousins in Alfred, New York, describe the battles of Fredericksburg and Rappahannock Station, hostility of Southern women, black children in camp, a black camp meeting, the Virginia countryside and the laziness of its inhabitants; he also comments on the draft, the performance of McClellan and Burnside, praises Lincoln, and criticizes the abolitionists. Also included is a pamphlet commemorating the 30th reunion of the 23rd Regiment.
