Includes early files of correspondence and papers relating to such organizations as the Ford Foundation English Teaching Project in Indonesia and the School of Languages and Linguistics, Foreign Service Institute, Department of State; general correspondence with individuals and organizations including Asia Society, Association for Asian Studies, Cornell University Libraries, Arun K. Dasgupta, Donn V. Hart, Cecil Hobbs, University of Malaya, Giok Po Oey, Harrison Parker, Hassan and Julia Shadily, and Hans van Marle. Subject file concerning the Cornell University Southeast Asia Program, Echols Collection, grant applications, Indonesia, foreign languages and literature, translations, and the International Conference on Asian History; and course materials with A-exams, class lists, and student grades; personal papers include articles and reviews by Echols, reports, his dissertation, memoranda and circulars of the Department of Far Eastern Studies (later the Department of Asian Studies), lecture and conference materials, broadsides, vitae, biographical information, personal correspondence; memorabilia, including shadow puppets, ceremonial knife, and ancestor festival model; photographs. Also, correspondence (1965-1982) between Echols and Hassan Shadily concerning the Ford Foundation, Cornell University Press and an Indonesian-English dictionary; also, photographs.

Biographical / Historical

Professor of linguistics and Asian studies; chairman of the Department of Far Eastern Studies, Cornell University. An authority on Indonesian languages and literature, Echols joined the Cornell faculty in 1952, served for several years as chairman of the Department of Asian Studies and at the time of his retirement in 1978 was associate director of the Cornell Southeast Asia Program and the Modern Indonesia Project. The Southeast Asia collection in Cornell University's Olin Library was named in his honor in 1977. Born in 1912, he died in 1982.
