John R. Mott: author, diplomat, philosopher. John R. Mott (Cornell University Class of 1888) helped organize the Cornell University Christian Association, forerunner of Cornell United Religious Work, and the ecumenical Cornell University Religious Association. He founded the World Student Christian Association and was instrumental in the organization of the International Missionary Council and the World Council of Churches, serving as first honorary president of the World Council. He was General Secretary of the International Committee of the Y.M.C.A., 1915 to 1931, and president of the World Alliance of Y.M.C.A.s, 1926 to 1947. President Woodrow Wilson appointed him to direct the United War Work Campaign and to serve as a member of the Special Diplomatic Mission to Russia in 1917; he was also one of three Americans on the Joint Commission with Mexico to deal with the crisis between the two countries. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1946.
