Scope and content

Includes a letter (Syracuse, 1910) to Effie Dallas Morse (Mrs. Virgil D. Morse) from Ellen M. Mitchell; a typescript copy of a letter (Copenhagen, 1915) to Mrs. Morse from her son, Robert V. Morse (Cornell University Class of 1911, LL.B. 1915) concerning the anti-American attitude in Germany; a letter (Albany, 1930) from Governor Franklin D. Roosevelt to Virgil D. Morse expressing his regrets at being unable to attend the opening of the Ithaca Reconstruction Home; a scrapbook (1903-1909) of the Morse's daughter, Dorothea Clara Morse Coors, concerning her years at Ithaca High School and Randolph-Macon Woman's College; scrapbook and "Souvenir Book" of Effie Dallas Custeed Morse; signed remarks made the Rev. Martin D. Hardin, Jr. on the death (1935) of Effie Morse, emphasizing the contributions she made to the welfare of the Ithaca, New York community; a photograph of Virgil D. Morse (1928) and one of Eddy's Dam in Ithaca; pamphlets concerning the literary and civic interests of the family; a letter to Robert V. Morse from Mary J. Hull; World War I letters and other items of Robert V. Morse; photographs; albums; and glass plate negatives. Also two volumes of "V.D.'s Stories as Told by Virgil D. Morse," 1861-1937, compiled by Robert V. Morse and Lillian Shaben, the book is a compilation of 181 stories that describe Virgil's life as boy growing up in Ithaca and later as a young man going west to the Dakota Territory. Includes stories such as, "Falling Down on the Cow," "Turning the First Sod; Cornell University," "First Day as a Telegraph Operator," "Filing a Claim in Dakota," "Shooting Prairie Chickens," "Ezra Cornell," and others.
