Scope and content

Includes correspondence, reports and memoranda, drafts and final copies of speeches given before farm and business organizations, articles written for the SYRACUSE POST-STANDARD and agricultural journals, press releases, pamphlets, statistical data, clippings, biographies, charts, and miscellaneous items, pertaining mainly to Butler's role as an American farm leader and dealing with agricultural policies and problems from the local to the international level, but also referring to his work as a counselor for Avco Manufacturing Corporation and to his support of the conservative wing of the Republican Party; of special interest are files concerning the survey of Brazilian rubber production in which he participated during World War II, the Reynolds Metals Company farming operation in Jamaica (1952), alleged Communist influence in American education during the 1950's, Cornell University and Ithaca, New York affairs, the Venezuela Peace Corps project (1962-1963), his trip to India (1964) as a member of the Farm Leader Exchange Program, Robert A. Taft's campaign for reelection to the Senate (1950) and his bid for the Republican presidential nomination (1952), and Barry Goldwater's views on price supports and other agricultural issues, as well as his consideration for the Republican presidential nomination in 1960 and his campaign for the Presidency in 1964.

Scope and content

Also includes printed and mimeographed information, chiefly on Russian agriculture and other aspects of the economic and cultural life of the USSR, but also dealing with Japan, Taiwan, Malaysia, Pakistan, the Dominican Republic, Colombia, and other countries in Asia and Latin America. Biographical / Historical

Agricultural consultant, author, and businessman. Karl Butler worked as farm counselor for Avco Corp., consultant and counselor for the SYRACUSE POST STANDARD; Secretary of the National Institute of Animal Agriculture; advisor or consultant to many agricultural organizations and businesses; and lecturer at the Cornell Graduate School of Business and Public Administration, now the Graduate School of Management.
