Scope and content

Collection consists of letters received by Professor Olmsted; some doggerel poetry written for Book and Bowl; manuscripts of papers delivered before the Book and Bowl Club, especially for the years 1907-1914; constitution and bylaws; minutes of the club, ledgers, lists of members, and financial records through 1988. Program for The Ill Wind Blows Again, April 1962 listing M.H. Abrams, Theodore Lowi, Jerrold Meinwald, and W. R. Sears. Also, "Book & Bowl Guests of Honor" book with signatures of banquet speakers, beginning in 1907, along with aBook and Bowl key from 1948 (MU-1010).

"Guests of Honor" book may be taken out by an officer of Book and Bowl for presentation and signing at the annual banquet.

Biographical / Historical

Everett W. Olmsted was a Cornell University Professor of Romance Languages and Literatures and was also for a time Treasurer of the Book and Bowl Club, humorously described as a beer and literary society. Book and Bowl was made up of both faculty and students; its main function was to have an annual dinner at which some distinguished person would be invited to deliver an address.

Custodial History

The Book and Bowl key (MU-1010, Box 1) was received by Keith Johnson in December 22, 1994. In the back part of the key charm, there is engraved the name KAHMURRAY. Lord Murray was Professor Olmsted's godfather.
