Biographical / Historical
Ernest H. Hespelt graduated from Cornell in 1910, received an M.A. in 1917, and a Ph.D. in 1925. From 1911 to 1916, he worked with the Bureau of Education in the Philippine Islands. He was an instructor of Spanish at Cornell University, 1919-1921, a Professor at Elmira College, 1921-1926, and at New York University, 1926-1952. His wife, Miriam Hasbrouck VanDyck Hespelt, received a Ph.D. from Cornell in 1919 and collaborated with him in translations and editing. The Davidsen family received aid in Germany from the Hespelts after World War II, and Hermann C. Davidsen served as a translator during the Nuremberg trials.
