Biographical / Historical

Howard Taubman was music editor of THE NEW YORK TIMES from 1935 to 1955, when he was appointed music critic. He was named drama critic in 1960 and became critic-at-large in 1966. He wrote OPERA FRONT AND BACK; MUSIC AS A PROFESSION; MUSIC ON MY BEAT; THE MAESTRO, a biography of Arturo Toscanini; HOW TO BUILD A RECORD LIBRARY; and THE MAKING OF THE AMERICAN THEATRE. He has also lectured, made radio appearances, and written many articles for national magazines.
