Biographical / Historical

Joseph Gardner Bradley graduated from Harvard Law School in 1904, and developed and operated coal and timber lands in central West Virginia. He became vice president of the Buffalo Creek & Gauley Railroad Company in Clay County, and later became president of the railroad's parent company, the Elk River Coal & Lumber Company, and the Bank of Widen. He was director of the Dauphin Deposit Trust Company and the Harrisburg Trust Company, both of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; Underwood Corporation; and trustee of the J.D. Cameron Bradley Trust. He was president of the National Coal Association, 1921-1922, and a director of the same association from 1919-1946; president of the West Virginia Coal Association from 1916-1946, and of the American Mining Congress during 1927-1928. He was also involved in West Virginia politics, working in several capacities for the Republican Party.
