The Archibald R. Ward papers contains scrapbooks, notebooks, and a photo album documenting Ward's studies and his work in the Philippines, primarily relating to cattle diseases such as rinderpest and contagious bovine pleuropneumonia, dating 1893-1941. . The collection includes aboratory notebooks kept by Ward as a student at Cornell University, one for a course in General Chemistry (1893-1894) and one for a course in Chemistry: Qualitative Analysis (circa 1895); a notebook compiled by Ward from 1931-1941, containing detailed typewritten autobiographical notes; an issue of the Bulletin of the Dairy Research Division, Frederick C. Mathews Company, Detroit, Michigan, containing an article on Ward; and a pamphlet, "Methods and standards for the production and distribution of 'certified milk,' adopted by the American Association of Medical Milk Commissions, Inc." (June 10, 1940). The typewritten notes include passages on growing up in Ithaca, New York; studying veterinary medicine at Cornell University; developments in bacteriology; the operation of boats on the Erie Canal; and rowing on the crew team.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Archibald Robinson Ward received his DVM from the New York State College of Veterinary Medicine in 1901. He was the first veterinarian to be appointed at the University of California, Berkeley. He also spent several years in the Philippines as the country's chief veterinarian, a position appointed by the United States Department of Insular Affairs. His primary purpose there was to rid the nation's cattle of several contagious diseases, such as rinderpest and contagious bovine pleuropneumonia. He later became Dean of the Veterinary College at the University of the Philippines, Manilla.
