Content Description

A collection of flyers from the Mumps' gigs at Max’s Kansas City, CBGB, and Club 57 in New York and at The Hot Club in Philadelphia. Also included are flyers, press photographs, press kits, unused record labels, copyright paperwork for one of the band’s earliest hits, a show contract for Hurrah, and original pasteup for some record artwork (on the back of an Iggy Pop / Ramones flyer, also done by Kristian Hoffman), a handwritten list of early contacts to send press materials, a calendar for the Left Bank venue featuring Swingin Madisons gig alongside the Cramps, promotional materials for the Swinging Madisons and a review in a 1980 issue of SHORT NEWZ fanzine.

Biographical / Historical

The Mumps formed in New York City in 1975 and played with many popular bands of the era. While they did not achieve large fame, they were one of the early groups on New York’s emerging mid-1970s punk scene. They were influential in the gay community, as multiple members were openly gay at the time. Band members were also very active in the Club 57 scene, known for a raw countercultural energy where artists mixed punk rock, camp, and avant-garde performance. The Swinging Madisons was a later group that shared members with the Mumps, notably songwriter/keyboardist Kristian Hoffman and drummer Paul Rutner.
