In August 1858, the USS Niagara arrived in New York City after laying the cable for the first transatlantic telegraph between Newfoundland and Ireland. The ship carried surplus telegraph cable, pieces of which became popular as souvenirs. The American jewelry company Tiffany and Co., founded by Charles Louis Tiffany in 1837, purchased much of the remaining cable (they claimed to have purchased it all), and used it to manufacture souvenirs. Tiffany and Co. sold small pieces of the transatlantic cable for fifty cents each. They also produced other souvenirs made from the surplus cable, including canes and umbrella handles. While initially popular, Atlantic Cable souvenirs fell out of favor when the cable itself failed in September 1858.
