Fred B. Eiseman, Jr. (1926-2013) was an American author, educator, and expert on the culture of Bali, where he lived for the majority of the last forty years of his life. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Eiseman earned a master's degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin, and a secong master's degree in Education from Columbia University. He taught Earth science, chemistry, and physics at John Burroughs School. He moved to Phoenix Country Day School in 1962 and retired in 1971 before relocating to Bali with his wife, Margaret. Among his most well-known publications is Bali: Sekala and Niskala (1989). Eiseman was also known for his interest in the American Southwest, particularly the Grand Canyon, where he served variously as a rafting guide, commercial boatman, and then as a private boater.
