Biographical / Historical
Straight to Hell is considered the first underground gay pornography zine, with a circulation of 20,000 at its apogee, and celebrity endorsements from John Waters, William S. Burroughs, Robert Mapplethorpe, and Gore Vidal. The zine was comprised of submissions from across America describing homosexual encounters, pornographic photographs accompanying submissions or sourced from gay pornography studios like Athletic Models Guide, and McDonald’s wry responses and engagement with the submissions, which often included political commentary and criticism.
