Biographical / Historical
Lyon and Martin co-founded the Daughers of Bilitis (the first national lesbian political and social organization in the United States) in 1955 and in the early 21st century advocated for marriage equality. On February 12, 2004, they were the first same-sex couple to get married in San Francisco after Mayor Gavin Newsom ordered the city clerk to begin providing marriage licenses to same-sex couples.
