Aspects of 1971-74 Project: Miscellaneous, 1971 - 1974

 File — Box: 1, Folder: 5

Scope and Contents

"1. Notes offered to me by Dr. Ianian Clayre during conversation in Kuching, Sarawak, in fall 1971 concerning oral literature, transcription, Dayak cultural life, and “the impossible art” of translation.

2. Some questions, notes, and comments by CR concerning songs.

3. Checklist, periodic update of work being done on the songs and chants of seven Dayak groups, as of July 1973.

4. Dayak designs, some sketches of typical motifs, drawn by Jok Bato, Kayan-Kenyah artist at the Sarawak Museum.

5. Notes by CR. Joking attempts to present a song in the oral literature style: For Sari Tayung Danjang, Bidayuh, but in her Bukar Sadong vernacular dialect; for Penghulu Lawai, Kelab it, in vernacular speech but in heroic mode; and for Penan groups. This lighthearted mode, in the midst of serious work in their regions, was met with much longhouse merriment.

6. Obituary of Benedict Sandin (1918–1982), who was Iban and the first Malaysian Curator of the Sarawak Museum (1966–74); in Sarawak Museum Journal."
