Subseries contains telegrams sent to individuals and businesses from the 1840s through the 1950s. Earlier messages are handwritten by the operator receiving them, while later messages are typed onto the message blank. Notable messages include telegrams to G. and C. Merriam Co. of Springfield, Massachusetts, publishers of dictionaries (1848-1873); a series of Western Union Special Greetings to Mr. and Mrs. Max Miller on their birthdays, wedding day, and anniversary; “Babygrams” announcing a birth (September 20, 1925); a telegram from Trans World Airlines publicity head Clancy Dayhoff to Los Angeles newspaper columnist Jimmy Starr, discussing financial investments made by the actor James Stewart in Thunderbird Air Corps Field, which would train around 10,000 pilots for the U.S. Army Air Corps by the end of World War II; and the first Western Union mailgram transmitted by satellite (September 6, 1974).
