Collection of German theater programs, Circa 1970-1990
Scope and Contents
Playbills and theater programs from German productions, mostly in West and East Berlin. Covers a range of productions of German and international theater (in German), primarily 20th-century work (with Brecht and Heiner Müller heavily represented), also plays of German Classicism and German-language productions of ancient drama, etc. The programs illustrate the evolution of important theaters of East Berlin (e.g., Berliner Ensemble, Deutsches Theater, Volksbühne) from the last decade of the German Democratic Republic through the early years of German unification. The wide range graphical styles, production values, and paper quality indicate the diversity of the theater scene of the period as well as Cold War disparities.
