Subseries IIa. Bound Volumes by Castle

 Sub-Series

Scope and Contents

These albums were created by Castle circa 1920 after her second marriage to Robert Treman of Ithaca, NY. Volumes 1-3 are stamped on the cover “IRENE CASTLE TREMAN.” Most of the photographs in these albums were taken between 1913-1918, when she and Vernon were at the peak of their fame (although no photos of Vernon are included). Single photos are pasted on one side only. Occasionally, Castle added explanatory text or clippings from magazines to the pages, which provide some context for the images. When planning her autobiography, "Castles in the Air", Castle apparently removed some pages of images from the albums in order to submit them to the publisher for consideration. She added paper tags with typed explanatory captions to the bottom of many of those pages, though many detached over time. Loose pages from these albums are housed together.
